Diwali: The Festival of Lights....Camera, and Action!
Naraka Chaturdasi: The Day of Diwali’s Ultimate Glow-Up!
Did you know that there are several ancient stories behind the Hindu festival of Diwali, the Festival of Light? Cue the spotlight on Naraka Chaturdasi, the second day of the five-day Diwali festival, also known as Choti Diwali! It’s the day when the legend of good triumphing over evil is celebrated with extra glow and gusto typically in the southern states of India.
A Demon King and a Divine Defeat 🎉
The main story behind Naraka Chaturdasi centers around the legendary defeat of the demon king Narakasura. He was quite the villain—known for his cruelty and his obsession with power. After wreaking havoc on Earth, his deeds finally caught up with him when Lord Krishna, alongside his wife Satyabhama, put an end to Narakasura’s mischief. But this story has a plot twist: both Krishna and Satyabhama were battling this powerful king. Narakasura then injured Krishna, who fell to the ground! Satyabhama was livid and a legendary battle began. She swung her weapons furiously - Narakasura tried to defend himself but he couldn't match her fierceness. She defeated him and helped restore peace and balance to Earth. And, of course, helped Krishna recover.
This moment of victory is what Naraka Chaturdasi celebrates, symbolizing the end of darkness and the beginning of light. Who knew demon slaying could be this festive?
